The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) destroyed ₱4.6 million worth of substandard and uncertified products on October 22. This is also in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to protect consumers and uphold the safety of construction materials nationwide.
Held as part of this year’s Consumer Welfare Month celebration, the ceremonial destruction involved 30,806 violative items, including steel products and ceramic sanitary wares that failed to meet mandatory certification standards under the Philippine Standard (PS) and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) schemes.
The operation was conducted in coordination with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and DTI’s regional and provincial offices to reinforce market surveillance and compliance monitoring.
This activity is part of the DTI Fair Trade Group’s sustained enforcement campaign, which also includes unannounced factory audits of 40 deformed steel bar manufacturers and expanded inspections of hardware stores and retail outlets across the country.
The Department reminded consumers to exercise vigilance when buying construction materials and other regulated goods, warning that uncertified items may look identical to compliant ones but fail to meet safety and performance requirements.
In addition, the DTI emphasized its commitment to responsible disposal through sustainable waste management practices, aligning consumer protection with environmental responsibility. END
